Crystal River
Crystal River is bursting with wildlife. Numerous rivers, natural springs, and a marshy coastline provide a perfect habitat to over 200 species of birds, manatees, dolphins, raccoons, and of course alligators.
The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of 20 islands and several small parcels of land surrounded by the crystal clear, spring fed waters of Kings Bay.
Six hundred million gallons of fresh water flow daily from more than 30 natural springs. The average 72 degree waters attract large numbers of manatees. During the winter months you will find herds of these giant mammals gathered in the warm protected waters. Canoeing and hiking are a great way to observe the wildlife without endangering the species.
The Crystal River Archaeological State Park has preserved a 28' high ceremonial mound built by American Indians who occupied the site from 200 B.C. to 1400 A.D. Here you can observe the temple and burial mounds along with many other artifacts.
With all of the area waters, fishing is a favorite pastime regardless of what type of fishing you enjoy.
