Bartow's major industries are cattle, citrus and phosphate. This area is one of the largest phosphate producing industrial complexes in the world.
Visit Fort Carroll built in 1841, erected by a detail of the 7th Infantry, U.S.A. while on a march to the Kissimmee River. It was named after Sergeant Major Francis Carroll who suffered a hero's death at the hands of Indians near Micanopy.
Bartow is also the site on which Fort Blount stood. The Fort was established in 1853 and used as a refuge for the settlers of this community during the Seminole Indian War. In 1867 Bartow received its name in honor of Confederate General Francis S. Bartow, who was the first general to fall in the Civil War.
