Sebring
Over 35,000 spectators flock to Sebring International Raceway for the excitement of American's oldest endurance race. Former champions include Mario Andretti, Al Holbert and Juan Manual Fangio. Celebrity participants have included Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and Steve McQueen.
Though best known for its raceway, the town's activities center is in-and around the 3,000-acre Lake Jackson. Boating, fishing, jet skiing, and sunbathing are a few of the favorites.
Founded by George Sebring, the original streets of the city were laid out in a wagon wheel design and in the center of the spokes lies the picturesque Circle Park. Sebring is located in Highlands County where ten percent of the land is covered by freshwater lakes, creeks and streams.
The Highland Hammock State Park is the oldest state park in Florida. This wildlife sanctuary covers 4,600 acres and provides safety to a multitude of Florida's wildlife.
Highlands County ranks high in the cattle industry. Have you ever heard the term "Florida Cracker?" Early Florida cow herders used a 10 - 12 foot long braided leather whip; the crack of these whips would bring in any stray cows; thus comes the terminology "Florida Cracker."
