Sebastian
The "Treasure Coast" received its nickname after a fleet of Spanish ships were shipwrecked in 1715 during a hurricane, spilling $14 million in cargo. For years they tried to recover the Spanish Crown, gold, and silver lost at sea. Divers still explore the reefs and shipwrecks looking for gold.
Sebastian's Riverfront takes you past old fish houses and dockside restaurants. From here you are bound to see one of hundreds of pelicans that reside on Pelican Island.
In 1903, Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Pelican Island the home of America's first National Wildlife Refuge. Today, this 5,375 acre preserve houses over 100 species of birds. You can stroll along the Centennial Trail's boardwalk nature trail; Environmental Learning Center offering a view of pine trees, mangroves, thousands of species of animals, fish, birds and over 36 rare or endangered animal species.
