St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg has been marketed as "The Ideal City by the Sea." This city on a Peninsula boasts of its thirteen downtown blocks of public waterfront. The St. Petersburg area is surrounded by 28 miles of Bay and Gulf beaches.
In 1885 a Baltimore physician, Dr. W.C. VanBibber, stood before the American Medical Association and proclaimed Pinellas to be "the healthiest place on earth." Thus, St. Petersburg was nicknamed "Health City USA."
Al Lang is credited for bringing baseball to St. Petersburg. The original spring training camps date back some 70 years. Today, they have their own major league baseball team, The Devil Rays.
Arts and culture play an active role in St. Petersburg. The Salvador Dali Museum houses the most comprehensive collection of original Dali art in the world. Other museums include the Great Explorations, a children's hands-on museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the St. Petersburg Historical Museum and Flight One Museum.
